The invention of temperature scales: a story of water and salt
The Fahrenheit scale was proposed by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1724. He originally set the temperature of an ice-salt mixture to 0 degF (the lowest temperature reliably reproducible at the time) and healthy human body temperature to 96 degF (later revised to 98.6 degF). So Fahrenheit zero isn’t “water freezing” but “salt water freezing”.
The Celsius scale was proposed by Anders Celsius in 1742 and is much simpler: at standard atmospheric pressure, ice’s melting point is set to 0 degC, water’s boiling point to 100 degC, divided into 100 equal parts in between. Intuitive and reproducible, it’s adopted by nearly every country except the US.
The US still sticks with Fahrenheit not because of “tradition” — but because a 1970s push to switch to Celsius failed. The cost of changing road signs, weather forecasts, recipes, and boiler thermostats was just too high to move.
That magical -40 crossover
The two temperature scales appear to use different zeros, but they’re both linear functions with different slopes, so they must cross at one point:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit:
F = C x 9/5 + 32 - Reversed:
C = (F - 32) x 5/9
Solve the two equations: when C = F = -40, both sides hold. This isn’t coincidence, it’s mathematical necessity — any two linear temperature scales with different slopes (Fahrenheit’s degrees are smaller than Celsius’s) must cross somewhere. When Celsius invented the scale, he originally set “water’s boiling point to 0 degC, ice’s melting point to 100 degC” (opposite of today’s!). Later generations flipped it to today’s version, but the physical meaning of the -40 crossover didn’t change — it’s the zero point of the two scales’ linear transformation.
Feels-like temperature isn’t actual temperature
Weather forecasts say “today 35 degC, feels like 42 degC” — those numbers differ by 7 degrees, and “feels like” (Heat Index) accounts for humidity and wind speed. The higher the humidity, the harder sweat evaporates, the hotter you feel; the stronger the wind, the faster sweat evaporates, the colder you feel.
So “feels like” is a composite indicator, not the real temperature. The common winter phrase “minus 20 degrees” refers to the actual temperature, but it may feel even colder (wind chill). Don’t confuse these two concepts.
